An agreement has been reached between the UK government and the EU on the status of EU citizens and their families in the UK after Brexit.

Theresa May has triggered the two-year process of negotiations that will lead to Britain leaving the European Union by serving notice to Brussels that she intends to end their 44-year relationship.

A letter invoking Article 50 of the Lisbon Treaty was hand-delivered to European Council President Donald Tusk by British Ambassador to the EU Tim Barrow on Wednesday. The letter outlines May’s wish to agree on ‘deep and special partnership’ with the EU. The prime minister also clearly expressed her willingness to continue collaborating with the EU on security and research. The letter outlines 7 negotiating principles, including minimising disruption and always putting the interests of EU citizens first.
