The UK continues with major changes in its immigration policy. Despite some concern it does not mean a crackdown. What the UK government does aim to do is to stop a chaotic inflow of immigrants. At the same time itis interested in attracting more skilled workers and promising young specialists into the country.

It is the reason why the Tier 4 study visa was replaced by a new type of visa – Student Visa. The Home Office also announced that starting from June 2021, all graduates from the UK universities would be able to apply for a Post-study work visa if they want to stay and look for a job in the UK.

Though the 2020-2021 academic year was complicated by the COVID-19 pandemic, it is expected that these changes will strengthen the UK reputation as one of the most attractive education destinations for foreigners.

What is a study visa?

Study visas allow foreign students to come to the UK to study. To obtain this type of visa, an applicant requires a letter of acceptance from the educational institution where they will study. Currently, there are two types of study visas available in the UK: Child Student visa and Student Visa.

Child Student visa

Child Student visa can be granted to children from 4 to 17 years old who want to study in a public school in the UK. The validity depends on the age of a student:

  • Under-16-year-olds – period of study (up to 6 years) plus 4 months after finishing school;
  • 16-17-year-olds – period of study (up to 3 years) plus 4 months after finishing school.

To get a Child Student visa, you need to submit the following documents:

  1. Letter of acceptance from a public school.
  2. Documents proving financial position.
  3. Written permission from parents or legal guardians.

If a child is under 12 years of age, they must be accompanied by a parent. Parents must apply for a Parent of a Child Student Visa Holder visa in this case.

This visa does not allow parents to work, study or do business in the UK. They are supposed to come to the UK only to take care of their child. That’s why the UK government asks for documents proving that an applicant’s family has sufficient financial resources to cover the expenses during the whole duration of their stay.

Student Visa

Student Visa is granted to young people over 16 years of age. This visa covers students for the whole period of study.

An applicant must meet the following requirements:

  1. Provide a letter of acceptance from the UK educational institution that has a valid sponsorship license.
  2. Prove availability of funds.
  3. Have sufficient knowledge of English.
  4. Provide a written permission from parents or legal guardians (if an applicant is under 18 years of age).

It is important to note that there are certain restrictions concerning the number of times you may apply for a Student Visa and the time you may spend in the UK as a student.

Post-study work visa

The UK government understands that it is far easier to find a job if you stay in the country and can attend an interview in person. That’s why a new visa type was introduced; it is issued for two years. Later on, if a young specialist manages to find a job, they can apply for a standard work visa.
